In 2024, consumption of aluminium foil decreased by -7.3% to 1.3M tons, falling for the third consecutive year after four years of growth. The total consumption indicated a perceptible increase from 2013 to 2024: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, consumption decreased by -21.1% against 2021 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak volume of 1.7M tons. From 2022 to 2024, the growth of the consumption remained at a somewhat lower figure.
The revenue of the aluminium foil market in the European Union rose rapidly to $6.4B in 2024, increasing by 7% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). The total consumption indicated pronounced growth from 2013 to 2024: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, consumption decreased by -23.3% against 2021 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $8.4B. From 2022 to 2024, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2024 were Germany (315K tons), Italy (260K tons) and Poland (106K tons), together comprising 52% of total consumption. Spain, France, Austria, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Greece and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.
From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +13.4%), while consumption for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest aluminium foil markets in the European Union were Italy ($1.4B), Germany ($1.2B) and Poland ($531M), together comprising 48% of the total market. Austria, Spain, France, Greece, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +15.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to market size among the main consuming countries over the period under review, while market for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The countries with the highest levels of aluminium foil per capita consumption in 2024 were Austria (9.9 kg per person), Bulgaria (6.1 kg per person) and Italy (4.4 kg per person).

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 32% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak volume of 1.6M tons. From 2022 to 2024, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, aluminium foil production rose significantly to $6.4B in 2024 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 48%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $8.5B. From 2022 to 2024, production growth failed to regain momentum.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2024 were Germany (400K tons), Italy (270K tons) and Greece (122K tons), with a combined 64% share of total production. Spain, Austria, Bulgaria, France, Poland, Sweden and Luxembourg lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +4.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2024, approx. 771K tons of aluminium foil were imported in the European Union; waning by -18.4% compared with 2023 figures. Over the period under review, imports saw a slight setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 with an increase of 32%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 1.4M tons. From 2023 to 2024, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, aluminium foil imports shrank dramatically to $4.2B in 2024. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 with an increase of 25%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $6.1B. From 2023 to 2024, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In 2024, Germany (126K tons), Poland (97K tons), France (87K tons), Italy (84K tons), Spain (66K tons), the Netherlands (46K tons), Belgium (43K tons), the Czech Republic (38K tons) and Austria (27K tons) was the main importer of aluminium foil in the European Union, generating 80% of total import. Denmark (23K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +2.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, Germany ($807M), Poland ($485M) and Italy ($434M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2024, together accounting for 41% of total imports. France, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Austria and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.
The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +4.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The import price in the European Union stood at $5,497 per ton in 2024, declining by -4.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2023 when the import price increased by 31% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $5,765 per ton, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2024, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Germany ($6,418 per ton) and Austria ($6,358 per ton), while Denmark ($4,334 per ton) and France ($4,636 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2024, shipments abroad of aluminium foil decreased by -16.2% to 687K tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports saw a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 5.1%. The volume of export peaked at 1.1M tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2024, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, aluminium foil exports reduced rapidly to $4.3B in 2024. In general, exports showed a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when exports increased by 19%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $6B. From 2023 to 2024, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In 2024, Germany (210K tons) was the major exporter of aluminium foil, comprising 31% of total exports. Greece (95K tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Italy (14%), France (6%) and Spain (5.2%). The following exporters - Belgium (29K tons), Sweden (26K tons), Poland (24K tons), Bulgaria (24K tons) and Slovenia (22K tons) - together made up 18% of total exports.
Exports from Germany decreased at an average annual rate of -3.6% from 2013 to 2024. At the same time, Greece (+4.1%) and Belgium (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Greece emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +4.1% from 2013-2024. Bulgaria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Slovenia (-2.0%), Italy (-2.3%), Poland (-3.2%), France (-3.9%), Sweden (-4.7%) and Spain (-10.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Greece (+8 p.p.), Italy (+2 p.p.) and Belgium (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Spain saw its share reduced by -6.2% from 2013 to 2024, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($1.4B) remains the largest aluminium foil supplier in the European Union, comprising 33% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($595M), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Greece, with a 10% share.
In Germany, aluminium foil exports plunged by an average annual rate of -2.1% over the period from 2013-2024. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (-1.9% per year) and Greece (+5.1% per year).
The export price in the European Union stood at $6,292 per ton in 2024, with a decrease of -5.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2024, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when the export price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $6,665 per ton in 2023, and then dropped in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2024, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($7,818 per ton), while Bulgaria ($4,311 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
